A SERIES OF SERVICE: ENVIRONMENTALISM
Community Service Commission (CSC) is so excited to host its very first Series of Service. Volunteer with either TreePeople or LA Audubon and learn more about service in the environment. This event is an amazing opportunity to learn more about service within the realm of environmentalism. Connect with fellow students who share the same passion about the environment. We hope volunteers learn more about meaningful service and what you can do in your community to truly make a lasting impact!
Date: Saturday, November 3rd
Meet at Sunken Gardens (Dickson Court North) at 8:30 AM
Buses will leave at approximately 9AM and return by 2PM for lunch

Sites Information:
TreePeople
Started in 1973 by Andy Lipkis, TreePeople has been and continues to be a strong force in the movement for a healthier Los Angeles. The mission of TreePeople is to unite communities through healing the Earth, planting and caring for trees, and “renewing depleted landscapes.” Because Los Angeles is almost entirely covered in asphalt and concrete, there is dire need for trees and nature that have been previously removed for urbanization. Further, the almost complete coverage in asphalt and concrete does not allow any rain to soak into the ground, stopping the rain water from being added to underground aquifers. So how do we fix this? TreePeople believes that “the answer is simple: bring nature back to our city streets and neighborhoods, and let nature do its job.”
On November 3rd, students visiting TreePeople will be helping to maintain plants that were previously planted and prepare landscapes for future planting.
TreePeople hopes to build lasting relationships with each one of you, and encourages you to return in the future to help better the Earth even more!
LA Audubon
Los Angeles Audubon’s mission is to promote the study and protection of birds, other wildlife and their habitats throughout the diverse landscapes of the Los Angeles area, and to stimulate popular interest in and access to nature for all Los Angeles communities. By collaborating with them this year, we hope to engage our volunteers in the process of restoring and protecting nature within their own communities, and cultivating the next generation of environmental stewards. Our volunteers will do this by removing invasive weeds and planting native plants, while interacting with the director of LA Audubon, Margot Griswold. Learning from an expert will hopefully inspire a long term engagement with the environmentalist cause!
