In March 2020, UCLA and the entire global community entered unprecedented territory with the COVID-19 pandemic. As the campus quickly transitioned to remote learning, UCLA faculty moved to call up the Fiat Lux Seminar Program as one way of responding to the needs of the Bruin community. The Fiat Lux Freshman Seminars (originally named the 9/11 Freshman Seminars), created in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided our students and faculty an opportunity to have formative conversations during a moment of national crisis. While the moment and circumstances were quite different with COVID-19, the challenge of fostering a sense of community and understanding remain the same.
In the week before the start of Spring 2020, the Fiat Lux Seminar Program sent out a special call to faculty to offer a remote seminar focused on the social, political, cultural, and scientific nature of disaster preparation, response, and recovery. Thirty faculty members answered the call and offered 25 seminars for Spring 2020 were offered. These spring COVID-19 seminars were in addition to already scheduled Fiat Lux seminars that also transitioned to remote learning.
The Division of Undergraduate Education continued this special call for COVID-19 seminars until Spring 2021.
