CALL FOR TEACHING ASSISTANT APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING 2025 SEMINARS

We are looking for teaching assistants who will design and lead a single spring seminar that covers a topic that is relevant to the theme of one or more of the following Cluster topics: Food & the Environment, Building Climates, Data & Justice, Race and Indigeneity in the US, Global Islam, America in the Sixties, Evolution of the Universe & Life, Biotechnology & Society, Sex & Gender, the Mind, and Aging. This is a unique opportunity to teach your own class on nearly any topic!

Seminar Details and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a seminar syllabus by enrolling in Writing Programs’ ENGCOMP 495N course in Winter 2025. You must take this course specifically designed to aid with inclusive syllabus design.*
  • Enroll in Writing Programs ENGCOMP 495O course in Spring 2025 while teaching your seminar. This course provides mentorship and class observation during spring quarter.*
  • Incorporate scaffolded writing assignments into the syllabus and balance formative and summative assessments (with consultation from Writing Programs and the Cluster Coordinator)
  • Lead an interactive, highly structured class, which is composed of one 2hr 50min class (seminar-style) each week of Spring Quarter
  • Independently teach a class of ~20 students

*Note: teaching assistants who have previously taught a seminar for the Cluster program are not required to enroll in 495N or 495O.

Preference will be given to those with teaching experience.

Funding Opportunity for the Academic Year, 2024-25

We are looking for teaching assistants for the 2024-25 school year. Selected students will receive a 50% TAship for the year and design and lead a spring seminar.

Clusters are year-long, collaboratively taught, interdisciplinary and open to entering first-years only. Cluster topics are: Food & the Environment, Building Climates, Data & Justice, Race and Indigeneity in the US, Global Islam, America in the Sixties, Evolution of the Universe & Life, Biotechnology & Society, Sex & Gender, the Mind, and Aging. Details and Responsibilities:

  • Attend Fall/Winter lectures
    • The first two quarters are traditional lecture courses, with lab/discussion sections taught by TAs.  You will be required to attend the lectures (1.25 hours twice a week) and teach two 2 hr lab/discussion sections (approx. 20 students each).
  • Attend weekly teaching team meetings
  • Grade Discussion Section and Writing assignments as well as exams
    • The course is “writing intensive” so experience and comfort with teaching writing is a must.
  • Develop and lead your own Spring Seminar
    • In the spring quarter, every member of the teaching team, including the TAs, gets to teach a weekly seminar on a topic of their choice that relates to the broad issues of the courses.  As preparation for these, new TAs will enroll in offerings of 495M/N/O courses all 3 quarters*.
  • Other duties may include helping to lead and facilitate co-curricular activities
  • Accept this appointment for the entire 2024-2025 Academic Year

*Note: teaching assistants who have previously taught a seminar for the Cluster program are not required to enroll in 495M/N/O.
