Capstone Requirement (MGMT 169)

The Management 169 Capstone experience in Entrepreneurship for the minor is designed to provide students with an understanding of how entrepreneurial companies work. It should be undertaken after students have completed all other academic requirements for the minor, allowing them to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the internship project. Many students find that the internship experience assists them in defining (or redefining) their career goals.

Host organizations should have an entrepreneurial culture.  Ideal organizations typically have 3-150 employees and limited or modest revenue. Operating companies often provide the best internship experiences, as they provide exposure across multiple functional areas of management that may include management strategy, product development and marketing. Venture capital, real estate and other financial services or asset management firms may be approved if the intern has significant exposure to senior management.

Projects should have SMART objectives: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound. They should provide professional exposure for the intern, including interaction with the founder(s), entrepreneurial leadership and/or CEO. Projects should not be primarily clerical in nature, but rather should be challenging, using the analytical frameworks and skills that students have developed through the minor in entrepreneurship coursework. Managers/supervisors are encouraged to meet weekly with their student interns. Interns will also meet biweekly with the supervising faculty member or a teaching assistant at the Anderson School.

MGMT 169 CAPSTONE COURSE  

MGMT 169 serves as the capstone for the Undergraduate Minor in Entrepreneurship (UME). It provides an opportunity to apply critical thinking, research skills, and practical applications obtained through the UME and a broader university education with one of the following experiences: an internship at an off-site entrepreneurial firm, an entrepreneurial on-campus internship, or active pursuit of an entrepreneurial startup idea from MGMT 161 as part of the business creation option (‘BCO”). We STRONGLY encourage students to pursue the internship option if possible!

UME MGMT 169 CAPSTONE APPLICATION FORM

Enrollment in MGMT 169 is by consent only and requires a student to receive approval from the minor for their internship or BCO prior to being enrolled in the class. Please submit the Management 169 Capstone Application Form(as a PDF) AND your current unofficial transcript by email to ume-capstone@anderson.ucla.edu before the quarter you intend to take MGMT 169 begins.

You are only eligible to submit the application form the quarter before you intend to take MGMT 169 if:

• All your other required courses for the minor will be completed before taking MGMT 169
• You will be enrolled in all the remaining minor requirements AND graduating from UCLA in same quarter for which you wish to enroll in MGMT 169
• In exceptional cases, you will be enrolled in your final course required for the minor during the same quarter as MGMT 169

MGMT 169 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For students using an internship to partially fulfill the requirements of this course, the student must have already secured the position prior to enrollment.  Students are encouraged to explore potential internships at for-profit firms, non-profit firms, and social benefit corporations depending on their career aspirations.  See the FAQ for additional information on desirable attributes for internships. The student must submit a signed form at the end of the term indicating they have worked a minimum of 80 hours supervised by staff in a professional workplace.  The supervisor must also sign the time sheet and must provide feedback on the student’s contributions throughout the internship.

Students pursuing the business creation option are expected to execute or enhance a business plan that has been developed in MGMT 161 utilizing lean startup methodology and will be expected to conduct customer discovery consisting of several meaningful interviews.

IMPORTANT NOTE: No students can be simultaneously doing the BCO option and taking MGMT 161 in the same quarter!  Absolutely no exceptions will be made!  However, students may be permitted to take MGMT 161 concurrently with MGMT 169 if they are doing the internship option with approval under special circumstances.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ONLY: Please contact the UCLA Dashew Center to find out if you are eligible to do an off-campus internship!  As of Fall 2019, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) eliminated the gray area that existed in existing regulation and UCLA is no longer able to authorize CPT for academic credit related to a minor course of study. Only internships relevant to academic majors can be approved.  F-1 visa certified schools by DHS must comply.  For details see the following memo from ICE:
